Our story

Dommy Leatherworks is a family business run by Marcell and Yaya. Marcell is a 6th-generation leather crafter who learned to make shoes the traditional handmade way. When she’s not chasing their three young sons, Yaya is a product developer and makes things run smoother in the workshop. The name DOMMY comes from the first letter of names of the five family members.

We are proud of being a traditional hand crafting workshop here in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania.

Materials we use

Dommy Leathercraft uses an array of natural and bio-degradable fibers and leathers. We believe in using and re-using, to honor the hard work and the leather itself.

Whenever we can, we opt for vegetable tanned leathers. Vegetable tanning refers to the technique of using plant derived tannins to preserve and process animal hides. It has been used by countless civilizations for millennia. This kind of tanning takes months to complete, as opposed to chrome tanning - that is widely used in the industry - which only takes a couple of days.

Veg-tanned leather, thus, is not vegan leather, but an eco-conscious and biodegradable material. Leather itself is a byproduct of the meat industry, making it a sustainable choice as long as meat consumption exists.

We like to use it because it’s durable, ages well and has that distinct leather smell that invites adventure.
